Persistent pain should be evaluated by a physician who may recommend cortisone injections, immobilization, or surgery. Seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Your pain is the result of an accident or injury.
  • Your pain is severe or intolerable.
  • A fracture or dislocation is visible.
  • Your pain is accompanied by a fever.
